Tolls paid by drivers in the tristate area account for nearly one-third of all the tolls paid in the United States every year, or more than $4 billion, statistica.com said.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey comes second in annual toll revenue, soaking metro area commuters for $1.3 billion, said statistica.com, an Internet site that analyzes numbers.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority bridges and tunnels comes in third with annual toll revenue of $1.2 billion.

The New Jersey Turnpike, 122 miles long, is the highest-earning toll generator in the country, collecting $1.4 billion every year, said statistica.com. The turnpike authority collects more revenue than any U.S. toll agency.
