Officials at the groundbreaking included U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, VA Hudson Valley HCS Director Margaret Caplan, Cortlandt Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi, along with local veterans.
Lowey voted in July 2014 for the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act, which provided funding for veterans health care initiatives, and has worked as the Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee to ensure funding for VA construction accounts.
“We will never be able to fully repay veterans who risked their lives defending the American way of life, but we can and must help them recover from injuries sustained during their service,” said Lowey.
Funding will allow for pool upgrades and reconstruction of damaged parts of the pool building, enabling year-round, physician-recommended therapy options for veterans enrolled in VA health care.
Upgrades and reconstruction are projected to be completed in spring/summer 2017.
The pool facility has been closed for 13 years.
The original, regular temperature indoor pool at the Montrose VA facility was converted to a therapy pool in 1999. However, the pool closed in 2002 because it needed major upgrades and repairs.
The Montrose campus offers health and mental health services, including the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse.
