Footprint Addresses the Square

Footprint is the name of an unusual fine art print competition and exhibit in which each work is exactly one foot square. The Center for Contemporary Printmaking's Footprint International, in its second year, solicited artists to submit works that meet this challenging size requirement. These works are now on view at the Center, until September. Anne Coffin, the Founder and Director of the International Print Center New York, was the juror of the competition.

This opportunity for contemporary printmakers to "address the square" in 12 inches by 12 inches (30.5 x 30.5 cm) brought entries from around the world. First place in the competition was awarded to Marianne Riss, of Germany.

Two Connecticut residents' works were also recognized in the show. Printmaker Ann Conrad submitted her square work, Interpolation I, 2010, Solar Intaglio.

Her works have been shown at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, The Katonah Museum, Katonah, NY, and the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, CT among other places. Marjorie Tomchuk is also a CT artist whose Collagraph monoprint, Basket Weave, 2009, received honorable mention. Her work has been exhibited extensively around the country. She also helped organize New Canaan's Silvermine Guild Art Center's "Art of the Northeast." The exhibit at Center for Contemporary Printmaking is open Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. For more information, visit the Center's website.
