Little Ferry Prepares For Annual Matthew Fenton Memorial 5K

LITTLE FERRY, N.J. – The Matthew Fenton Memorial 5K Run/Walk will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 5 at Willow Lake Park.

Marine Sgt. Matthew J. Fenton died May 5, 2006. The 24-year-old Little Ferry resident was fatally injured while conducting combat operations in Iraq. He is a symbol of hope and valor within the community, and the 5K run/walk is a small token of the community’s appreciation for him.

At his funeral, Fenton was made an honorary Little Ferry police officer, the job he was to have upon his return to Little Ferry. He was with the Forces Reserve’s Inspector and Instructor Staff, 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division Fort Devens, Mass.

Race proceeds will support local first responders, as well as the Semper Fi Fund, which provides services for wounded and critically ill service members from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

Register online here until Friday, June 3, register by mail before Wednesday, June 1 or register on race day starting at 7:30 a.m. at the registration tent. Race-day entry is $25.

The top three male/female overall prizes are:

  • First place – $250
  • Second place – $150
  • Third place – $100

T-shirts will be given to the first 700 runners. The day also will include a DJ, refreshments, B-Tag scoring by Compuscore, an awards ceremony, prizes and family and kids activities.
