Mamaroneck will play West Genesee noon Sunday for the championship. It's Mamaroneck's first shot at the state title in seven years.

The "Frozen Four" playoffs are held at Buffalo's HarborCenter.

Coach Mike Chiapparelli's Tigers are now 23-2, and ranked third among public high school teams statewide.

The Panthers, state runners-up in 2012, trailed the entire game.

Mamaroneck goaltender Tommy Spero had 38 saves for the win.

MHS' last trip to the state's semifinal playoffs was in 2009. The Tigers lost a nail-biter to Greece-Arcadia for the state championship that year, 3-2, in the final three minutes of play.

The other hockey semifinalists this weekend are West Genesee High School and Saratoga High School. West Genesee has won four state hockey titles, while Saratoga has won two state hockey championships.

Mamaroneck advanced with a 5-1 win over Massena during the regional championship at Sport-O-Rama Ice Rink in Monsey last Saturday. The Tigers won the Section I Division I championship by defeating Suffern, 5-1.
