Officer Chris Fasulo got the probe rolling when he determined that the person who used cards reported stolen from the Edison Road gym was a woman 45 to 50 years old, Police Chief James Batelli told Daily Voice.

Fasulo, Detective Sgt. Kevin Hebert and Detective Michael Grassi tracked common days and timelines of the thefts, then went undercover at the club, the chief said.

After someone stole cash, credit cards and gift cards from a locker Thursday morning, the team identified a suspect with help from Dispatcher Rachel Peterson, Batelli said.

A short time later, officers stopped Jill Margulies, 48, in her car. With here were items stolen from the club, the chief said.

What's more, she had "clohing she admittedly shoplifted from various other retailers located in Ramsey, Paramus, Ridgewood, Midland Park and Woodcliff Lake," he said.

Officers also seized various stolen gift cards, funded with items that Batelli said Margulies stole and then returned to the stores where the owners bought them.

Police released Margulies on a Municipal Court summons charging her with burglary, theft and receiving stolen property.

Meanwhile, Batelli said his officers were working with police in the towns where the shopliftings occurred.
