Wendel Ryan Phillip, 29, of Bayonne was headed south, just before the toll, when the stolen vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and crashed around 11:20 this morning, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said this afternoon.

Pentangelo said he got out and pulled a knife on pursuing Bayonne officers but that they subdued him with the help of Port Authority police.

Pending charges include aggravated assault on police, assault on the civilians in the other car and weapons possession, he said.

The bridge remained temporarily closed as the clean-up and investigation continued.
