Cariddi “has not been suspended, has not been removed, has not been fired,” Watkins told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “He’s just taking a leave.”

Indeed, the chief is keeping his pay and his gun, following a personal issue that CLIFFVIEW PILOT has confirmed but will not disclose out of consideration for him and his family.

Cariddi, who has suffered from severe back trouble, has been chief for three years.

Walker, the No. 2 officer in the department, has served as the Operations Division Commander.

Watkins said she and council members plan to discuss Cariddi’s situation tomorrow and Monday. She said the chief didn’t specify how long he expected to be out.

“We’ll play it by ear and see what develops,” the mayor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.
