On opening day, Down to Earth Markets will host a compost bin at the Sunday market. The market invites the community to contribute food scraps all season long. As the season progresses, customers will be able to take the mature, nutrient-rich compost back to their own gardens. Any remaining compost at the end of the season will go to the Croton Community Garden.

The Croton Recreational Department has planned for the compost program to begin with a skill share by the Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Guitarist Ed Packer will provide music from 10 a.m. to noon.

In addition to the compost bin, the Croton-on-Hudson Farmers Market will begin an effort to eliminate single-use, plastic shopping bags. Popularly known as B.Y.O.Bag – Bring Your Own Bag – market staff will share information and resources to encourage the use of reusable bags for market shopping.

In 2015, the theme of Down to Earth Farmers Markets is "Every Food Has a Season." At the Croton-on-Hudson Farmers Market, local farmers and food makers bring the freshest foods of the seasonal harvest. As the seasons change, Down to Earth Markets’ recipe program will feature full market-sourced meals with something for both vegetarians and omnivores. Customers are invited to explore the seasons through one dish or all of them.

Croton-on-Hudson’s Down to Earth Farmers Market will be from May 10 through Nov. 22 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot on Municipal Place off the Route 9 exit.

Confirmed day vendors who will appear on a rotating basis are Bombay Emerald Chutney Company, Kontoulis Family Olive Oil, North Winds Lavender Farm and Taiim Falafel Shack.
