The town held its annual Veterans Day ceremony Tuesday at the Muriel H. Morabito Community Center. In October, the town unveiled its Purple Heart memorial outside of town hall.

Cortlandt is the first Purple Heart community in Westchester and is the first place in the region to have a memorial honoring the Purple Heart.

The Veterans  Day ceremony was accompanied with music from the 89th Army Band of the New York Guard, commanded and conducted by Warrant Officer Roy C. Coates. The 89th Army Band is based out of Camp Smith in Cortlandt and has performed at various ceremonies since 2001.

"We are here today because of you," Supervisor Linda Puglisi said to the veterans at the ceremony. "We will fight to ensure you have the services that you deserve."

Puglisi said the town will continue to remain vigilant to make sure that services are always rendered at the Montrose VA.

"We have to make sure the doors are always open," Puglisi said. "We have to continue this good fight."

At the ceremony, Puglisi announced that the indoor swimming pool and gymnasium at the VA will be repaired next year.

"Our voices are small compared to these veterans," Puglisi said. "But there are some veterans in hospital beds and on the streets. We can't forget them. We have to do everything to help our veterans. They fought for us, we will fight for them."

William Nazario, chairman of Cortlandt Hudson Valley Veteran's Committee praised Cortlandt for always thinking of its veterans.

"When we have rallies you guys show up," Nazario said. "You fight for veterans and those in uniform. This is a great town. We have a good thing going here."

Nazario said he plans to keep fighting to ensure veterans get the services they deserve.

"We don't ask for anything that we're not entitled to," Nazario said. "These men and women do not come home unwounded. If we stick together as one voice, they can't stop us."
