As of Monday, the Nutmeg State’s average price for a gallon of gas was $2.006. Compared to last week, prices are down a nickel; compared to last month, down 16 cents; and compared to last year, down 28 cents.

Connecticut -- which holds steady at 11th for the state with the highest gas prices in the nation -- now is one of only 12 states where prices are above the $2 mark.

We are neck and neck with Vermont, where prices are a scant .003 (three-thousandths of a percent) lower than Connecticut.

The last time Connecticut saw average prices under $2 was on Feb. 26, 2009, but that lasted only two days before the numbers began to climb higher than $2.

AAA’s weekly survey of prices in the Nutmeg State’s four regional areas are as follows:

  • Greater Bridgeport/Stamford: $2.11 per gallon
  •  New Haven/Meriden: $1.98
  • Greater Hartford: $1.98
  • New London/Norwich: $1.99
  • Statewide Average: $2.006

On the national level, Monday’s average price is $1.83, down 6 cents compared to last week; down 18 cents since last month; and down 21 cents since last year.

California and Hawaii continue to have the highest gas prices at $2.67 and $2.63, respectively.

Oklahoma and Missouri continue to register the lowest prices in the nation at $1.53 and $1.54, respectively.
