A report by Dogwood Lane residents about a campfire burning in woods behind their home prompted a warning from Weston police. "This is much more serious than it may appear," Detective Carl Filsinger said in an email. "Gusts of wind can scatter hot ashes over a wide area and easily ignite into an out of control fire."
Several years ago, a laborer working at a house under renovation started a small fire to keep warm, but it spread to several acres, Filsinger noted. "It is one thing to be cited for a burning violation and another being arrested and charged with the destruction of land and buildings," he said.
In Connecticut, it is illegal to kindle an outdoor fire without a fire marshal's authorization. Violation of the state or local burn ordinance is a misdemeanor, punishable by fines of up to $200 and six months in prison.

Weston Police responded to a call Saturday from a Dogwood Lane resident who claimed that jewelry was stolen from her home. There were workers at her house, Filsinger said, but responding officers found no signs of a force entry.
