Approximately one in three Americans go shopping on the Friday after Thanksgiving, looking for special yearly discounts, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. Last year, more than $11 million was spent among 225 million people.

“We know it’s a huge day for us each year, really the whole weekend gets pretty crazy,” said Maddie Ruiz, a manager at Best Buy in Yonkers. “There’s usually a huge rush when we first open up in the morning, and things steadily die down throughout the day. Even then, it’s still one of the busiest days of the year, we have to stock extra staff.”

Kohl’s, which features more than 500 unique discounts for shoppers on Black Friday, started its sale at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Sales included everything from children’s toys to big screen televisions.

“It’s definitely tough, and the hours are rough, but it’s something you come to expect after awhile,” said Jeannie Lewis, a cashier at Kohl’s in Port Chester. “This year was actually quieter than some years past, but it was still busy.”

Not all retailers support the recent tradition of opening their doors and sales on Thanksgiving. On its website, P.C. Richard and Son posted a statement condemning the competition that takes away from the traditions of Thanksgiving.

“It is our opinion that retailers who choose to open on Thanksgiving Day show no respect to their employees and families, and are in total disrespect of family values in the United States of America,” it said.

Shoppers were eager to get started on Friday morning, hoping to get the best deals. Mike McGill said that he set his alarm for 4 a.m. with the intention of heading to outlet stores on Long Island.

“This is the day you try to get all your Christmas shopping done,” he said. “(You’re) going to be tired by the end of the day, but you really can save a ton of money just by waking up a little bit early.”
