Last-minute shoppers can also take advantage of Rutheny's extended hours. During the show, which opened Wednesday and continues through Friday, Feb. 15, the shop is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The juried show includes beaded, knitted and metal-smithed items, including some made of custom glass beads, known as glass lampworking. Styles range from dangly and darling to industrial and daring, and subject matter is varied, too: everything from golden orbs, bugs and bikes to tiny translucent origami earrings fill the store's cases. One artist, Karen Sawdey, even creates jewelry inspired by Emily Dickinson's poetry.
"It's the only one of its kind," said shop owner Jennifer Rutheny about the show. There are craft shows which highlight Croton and Cortlandt's abundance of artists, but the Valentine's-centric Extravaganza is special, she says, since "It's all jewelry."
Rutheny also creates Rutheny Jewelry's distinctive line of miniature flowers, leaves, and local birds and beasts.
Most of the artists are from Croton; others hail from throughout the Hudson Valley. Most or all artists will be present at an "opening"-style event at 6 p.m. Friday. Rutheny Jewelry is located at 80 Brook St., Croton-on-Hudson.
