Low Wages, High Rents Lock Out Many In New York, Report Finds

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A recent report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition says a person earning minimum wage in the U.S. is unable to afford a fair market two-bedroom apartment without spending more than 30 percent of their income, according to Huffington Post.

Many workers in the U.S. don't make enough to properly afford a two-bedroom apartment.

The report found that the average hourly rate to afford a two-bedroom apartment at the national average of $1,006 per month is $19.35, more than $4 more than the average hourly rate actually being earned, which is $15.16 per hour, Huffington Post reported.

New York was one of the worst states in the country. Workers need to earn $25.67 an hour to afford the average two-bedroom apartment. Only Hawaii, Washington, D.C. and California were more expensive, Huffington Post said.
