Croton's Blue Pig Earns Green Business Certification

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y -- The Blue Pig is one of the first businesses in Westchester County to achieve green business certification through Westchester Green Business-Certified, a program launched by Westchester County and The Business Council of Westchester earlier this year.

The Blue Pig will hold a ceremony to announce its certification Monday, Sept. 22, at noon at the establishment, where it will be honored by WGB-Certified program staff, local officials and guests.

Using locally sourced ingredients for its homemade ice cream is at the heart of The Blue Pig’s sustainable business practices. Sometimes that means even growing the ingredients themselves.

Lavender, peppermint and strawberries are grown on the roof of the village storefront. This commitment to sustainable practices can be seen in all aspects of this small retail shop. Reclaimed building materials are the choice for new construction projects, and metal spoons are offered to customers as an alternative to plastic.

A hand-hewn pergola was completed this season, using locally sourced wood. It covers the outdoor patio and creates a unique space for customers to enjoy. “Receiving this certification shows our customers our level of commitment -- commitment to our product and commitment to bettering our community,” siad owner Lisa Moir.

WGB-Certified participants delve into all aspects of running a sustainable business – from setting environmental policies and measuring emissions to implementing more than 90 strategies regarding energy, transportation, waste management, land use and water.  For more information about WGBC and WGB-Certified, including sponsorship opportunities, visit www.westchestergreenbusinesschallenge.org or contact WGBC program directors Dani Glaser and Scott Fernqvist at westchestergbc@gmail.com.
