WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- A novel approach to cheesecake has led a local entrepreneur to turn his pot of decadent dessert into a new storefront set to open on Martine Avenue in White Plains Saturday, Oct. 1.

McCants Mini Cheesecake, founded by Michael McCants, is only five months old -- yet selling like gangbusters. McCants said he came up with the idea to sell mini cheesecakes in April -- his older brother, Henry McCants IV, a licensed chef with more than 25 years experience, is the baker -- but creating and packaging them became a challenge.

"So, I thought, why not just put the cheesecake in a jar," said Michael.

That was in April with discussion after discussion on how to create the best recipe. The end result? Flavor-infused cheesecakes in varieties such as Cookies N Cream, Espresso and Strawberry, all hand-blended and served in 4-oz. containers.

The two brothers started selling at the Stamford Downtown Farmers Market in June, experimenting with a variety of local ingredients along the way. "Taste and freshness will always be the driving factor," explained Michael.

This, despite the fact that Michael doesn't even love cheesecake. "I like it but I'm not a huge fan," he said.

What he is, however, is a successful entrepreneur who knows a good product when he sees one (or invents one). The White Plains native -- he graduated from White Plains High School -- started his first company, CADD Masters, a computer drafting firm in 1999 and ever since has had the bug to start other companies.

Now living in Croton, he's since opened a fitness center, MDM Fitness in White Plains, a Unisex Salon MDM Styling in White Plains and a few small service type businesses.

McCants Mini Cheesecake will be at 4 Martine Avenue in White Plains, and will sell, along with its 12 flavors of cheesecakes, gourmet coffee and teas and a variety of grab and go food.

Recently introduced flavors include Key Lime, Smore's, Rocky Road, Reese's Peanut Butter, Blueberry and Pumpkin.

More information, along with details on buying the cheesecakes online, can be found at www.mccantsminicheesecake.com/.
