CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. Croton's backyard-birder store, Feed the Birds, is participating in an ongoing fundraiser for the Croton Arboretum, to help offset costs incurred during last years Halloween snowstorm.
All proceeds from the sale of reusable shopping bags, $6 each, will be donated to the Jane E. Lytle Memorial Arboretum, which closed for months due to numerous downed numerous trees.
One of the reasons we opened Feed the Birds in Croton was the areas strong interest in nature-related activities, said store owner and Croton resident, Rob Armanini. Being the local nature shop, one of the obvious things for us to do was join the arboretum. We quickly realized they are funded entirely by donations, and the importance of those donations became even more evident when several storms caused some significant damage last fall. We wanted to help in an on-going capacity and were proud to be supporting Croton's very own natural treasure."
The volunteer-operated non-profit Croton Arboretum closed for seven months following a freak October snowstorm that cancelled Croton's Halloween, and downed numerous mature trees in the arboretum. More than $14,000 in cleanup work was undertaken at the arboretum, using funds originally allocated for boardwalk improvements at the 20 acre wood and wetland nature preserve.
The Kelly green shopping bags are made of Non-Woven Polypropylene (PWPP), a recyclable, non-toxic, non-allergenic, and machine washable fabric. Feed the Birds is located at 326 S. Riverside Ave. in Croton and is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
